Woven Histories – VIP Guided Tour at the National Gallery of Art – Members Only

Sunday April 28 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

We are delighted to announce that we have been offered a private guided tour of Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction at the National Gallery.

This transformative exhibition explores how abstract art and woven textiles have intertwined over the past hundred years. While textiles have often been considered “lesser,” due to their status as women’s work, domestic craft, and applied art, Woven Histories has collected 160 works by 50 creators, stretching across continents and generations, to create a dialogue that explores the contributions weaving and textiles have had to the concept of abstraction, one of the foundations of modern art.

The exhibit includes a variety of textile techniques, including weaving, knitting, netting, knotting, and felting. Artists include Anni Albers, Rosemarie Trockel, and Jeffrey Gibson (Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians/Cherokee Nation), and explores the reasons for artist engagement in the textile world. Whether seeking to effect social change, addressing political issues. revitalizing abstraction’s formal conventions or critiquing its patriarchal history and gendered identity, engaging with textiles as subject, material, and technique, this exhibit centers the voices of those who have previously been marginalized for their gender, class, and race.

We are delighted to be able to offer our members a tour of the exhibit, led by Harvard grad Nathalie Ryan EDM ’02, before it closes on January 15th. Nathalie is a senior educator in the Department of Interpretation Learning and Engagement at the NGA, and will be able to give us additional insight to the works in the exhibit.

And bring your own projects, because following the tour, we will (weather permitting) walk over to the Sculpture Garden to relax, chat, and engage in textile art of our own. Want to learn how? Email Julia (the featured photo is her own woven piece, now on display at Walt Disney World) and she’ll bring some extra supplies.

Tour details: Use the 4th St entrance to the East Building of the National Gallery of Art. There’s a “tours start here” sign near the information desk.
