Join us at Arena Stage on June 15th to watch Harvard alumna Karoline Xu ’17 in the starring role of their current production, Exclusion.
A new comedy by Kenneth Lin, Exclusion tells the tale of what happens when an award-winning historian is thrilled when her best-selling book about the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 is optioned for a mini-series by a Hollywood mogul. Her euphoria turns to disillusionment as she finds herself constantly defending its authenticity in the struggle between what’s true and what sells. One of Arena Stage’s “power plays,” the world premiere of Exclusion promises to be a wickedly funny satire about television and race during a time of both heightened Sinophobia and as Asian and Asian American films and actors are belatedly being watched and awarded by white audiences, such as last year’s brilliant, absurdist drama Everything Everywhere All at Once.
